What to know about River Cruising

River cruising is a genuinely different product from ocean cruising rather than a smaller version of it. The ships are long, low and narrow — dimensions dictated by the locks and bridges they must pass — and typically carry between a hundred and two hundred guests. There is one main restaurant, a lounge and a sun deck; the ship is transport and hotel, not the attraction.

The compensation is location. River ships dock in the centre of towns rather than at industrial cargo terminals, often overnight, and guided excursions are usually included rather than sold separately. The established European routes run the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine, Rhône and Main, with the Mekong, Nile, Mississippi and Amazon making up most of the rest of the market.

River Cruising: frequently asked questions

How do river ships differ from ocean ships?

Size and constraint. River vessels are built to fit locks and pass under bridges, so they carry roughly one to two hundred guests with a single dining room and no large entertainment venues. They also dock centrally in towns, and because rivers are calm there is effectively no motion at sea.

Why do water levels affect river cruises?

Rivers are shallow and variable. Prolonged drought can leave too little draught to pass safely under a bridge or through a stretch of river; heavy rain can raise the water so high that a ship cannot fit beneath one. Operators respond by swapping ships mid-route, coaching guests between vessels, or altering the itinerary — which is why advisories are a routine part of river cruise news.

Is more included in a river cruise fare?

Generally yes. Most river fares include daily guided excursions, wine and beer with meals, and Wi-Fi, and many include airport transfers. The headline price is therefore higher than an equivalent ocean fare but covers considerably more of the total cost.
