Everything CruiseEnthusiast Daily has published on Onboard Experience — 27 daily briefings from May 1, 2026 to October 29, 2026, newest first.
What to know about Onboard Experience
The onboard product is where cruise lines make most of their margin, and it is consequently where policies change most often. Almost every mainstream line now runs the same basic structure: a fare that covers the cabin, the main dining rooms, the buffet, casual venues and entertainment, plus a layer of paid extras — specialty restaurants, drinks packages, Wi-Fi, spa treatments and shore excursions — sold before and during the voyage.
The daily service charge sits awkwardly between the two. It is added automatically to every guest's account, is not part of the advertised fare, and is adjusted upward by most lines every year or two — which makes it one of the most consistently newsworthy items in cruising, along with changes to what drinks packages cover and how internet is tiered and priced.

Onboard Experience: frequently asked questions
What is the daily service charge, and is it optional?
It is an automatic per-person, per-day charge covering tips for dining and housekeeping staff. Most lines allow it to be adjusted or removed at guest services, though some pre-paid fares and luxury lines include it and do not. Rates are raised periodically and typically apply to new bookings first.
Are drinks packages worth buying?
It depends almost entirely on how much you drink. Packages are priced to be profitable at average consumption, so the break-even is usually several alcoholic drinks a day. Most lines also require every adult in a cabin to buy the package if one person does, which changes the arithmetic considerably.
Why is cruise ship Wi-Fi expensive and slow?
Ships connect by satellite rather than cable, and bandwidth at sea is shared among thousands of people. Low-earth-orbit satellite service has improved speeds substantially across the industry, but capacity is still finite, which is why packages remain tiered by device count and by whether streaming is permitted.
What is included in the cruise fare?
On mainstream lines: your cabin, main dining room and buffet meals, several casual venues, entertainment, pools and the gym. Specialty dining, alcohol, soft drinks on some lines, Wi-Fi, spa, shore excursions and the daily service charge are extra. Luxury lines include most or all of these in the fare instead.
