💡 How to Get the Best Cruise Deal

    🗓️ Book During Wave Season

January through March is "Wave Season" — when cruise lines offer their best promotions of the year. Watch for Free at Sea, All-Inclusive packages, and bonus onboard credit.

    ⚡ Act on Flash Sales

Flash sales last 48–72 hours and can cut prices by 30–50%. The daily editions report sales as the cruise news outlets publish them. Always check if the sale applies to your preferred cabin category.

    🛏️ Bid for Upgrades

Royal Caribbean's RoyalUp, Celebrity's MoveUp, and Princess's Bidding programs let you bid for upgrades at a fraction of retail. Check 30–90 days before sailing.

    🔄 Use Refundable Deposits

Book multiple sailings with refundable deposits, then cancel all but your favorite before final payment. You lock in wave-season prices without commitment risk.

    When to sail, by region

Fares move with the calendar more than with any promotion. Every region has a peak the lines price into and a shoulder either side of it, when the same ship on the same route sells for noticeably less. The table below is the shape of that calendar. It carries no price figures: this site does not hold live fare data, and a made-up average is worse than none.

Region Sailing season Peak (priced highest) Shoulder (best value) Lines most deployed there Our coverage
🏖️ Caribbean Year-round Dec–Apr May–Jun, Sep–Nov (Atlantic hurricane season) Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MSC, Norwegian Caribbean

Deployment and season pattern, not fares. Checked 23 September 2026 against the lines' published deployments. Seasons shift year to year; confirm the specific sailing with the cruise line.

What actually moves a cruise fare

The calendar, first. A ship is a fixed cost that sails whether it is full or not, so lines price to fill it. The gap between a peak week and the shoulder week either side of it is usually larger than any flash sale, and it needs no promo code — it is simply the published fare on a different date. Alaska is the clearest case, because the season is only five months long and the two ends of it are the two cheapest.

Then the booking window. Fares are typically lowest very early, when a deployment first opens and the line wants a base of bookings, and again very late, when unsold cabins are worth more sold cheap than sailing empty. The middle — roughly six to nine months out — is usually the most expensive place to buy. Late booking trades price against choice: cabin categories, dining times and flights are all thinner.

Cabin category, more than people expect. Across the sailings currently on our comparison page, moving from an inside cabin to a balcony adds roughly two-thirds to three-quarters to the per-person fare. That is a bigger decision than the sale banner on the same page.

And what the fare does not include. Gratuities, drinks packages, speciality dining, shore excursions, wi-fi and port taxes are the difference between the advertised number and the number on the card. A promotion that bundles gratuities or onboard credit can be worth more than a headline percentage off — which is why the offers listed above show perks rather than only a discount figure. Our cruise cost calculators work the extras out, and booking tips collects the tactics as our coverage reports them.

Every fare promotion we have reported

The table above lists an offer only while one is current. This table is the longer record: every named promotion with a published discount that our daily editions have reported, newest first, quoted from the edition it ran in. These are not live offers. A Labor Day sale reported in August has closed. They are here because the pattern is more useful than any single sale — it shows which operators discount, by how much, and how often.

Across 125 daily editions that carried a fare and booking section, 14 named a promotion with a figure attached, and 111 reported that the day’s trade sources carried none — 89% of days. That is the honest answer to how often cruise lines discount: a headline sale is the exception, and the seasonal calendar above moves fares more reliably than any of them. 11 operators appear: Margaritaville at Sea, Scenic Group, Riviera Travel River Cruises, Hurtigruten, Royal Caribbean, Cunard, Aurora Expeditions, Seabourn, Costa Cruises, Norwegian, MSC Cruises.

    ❓

    Cruise deals: frequently asked questions

How often do cruise lines actually run a discount?

Less often than the word “deals” suggests. Across 125 daily editions of this newsletter that carried a fare and booking section, 111 reported no qualifying fare promotion in the day’s trade sources — 89% of days. 14 editions named a promotion with a published figure attached.

Which cruise lines discount most often?

In the promotions this site has reported, 11 operators appear: Margaritaville at Sea, Scenic Group, Riviera Travel River Cruises, Hurtigruten, Royal Caribbean, Cunard, Aurora Expeditions, Seabourn, Costa Cruises, Norwegian, MSC Cruises. Premium and expedition operators are over-represented relative to their share of the market, and the largest mainstream lines discount add-ons and packages more often than base fares.

How big is a typical cruise discount?

The percentage discounts reported here run from 15% to 65% off, and almost all of them are “up to” figures that apply to selected sailings and cabin grades rather than the whole fleet. Moving a booking from a peak week to the shoulder week either side of it usually changes the fare by more than a headline sale does, and needs no promotion code.

When is the cheapest time to book a cruise?

Fares are typically lowest very early, when a deployment first opens and the line wants a base of bookings, and again very late, when unsold cabins are worth more sold cheap than sailing empty. Roughly six to nine months out is usually the most expensive place to buy. Booking late trades price against choice: cabin categories, dining times and flights are all thinner.

Does this page list cruise fares I can book?

No. This site holds no live fare data and takes no bookings. The offer table shows promotions compiled from cruise news when the sources carry them, with representative pricing; the record below it quotes promotions as they were reported on a given date, most of which have since closed. Confirm every figure with the cruise line.
