What to know about Luxury Cruising
Luxury cruising is defined less by décor than by two structural differences: ship size and what the fare includes. The ships are small — often a few hundred guests rather than several thousand — with high crew-to-guest ratios and, on many lines, suites throughout rather than a range of cabin grades. That scale lets them enter ports the large ships cannot and dispense with the queueing and scheduling that shapes mainstream cruising.
The commercial model differs just as much. Luxury fares are largely or entirely inclusive, typically covering drinks throughout the ship, gratuities, specialty dining and Wi-Fi, and on some lines shore excursions and even flights. The headline price is therefore much higher while the onboard bill is close to nothing — which makes a direct comparison with a mainstream fare misleading unless the extras are added back in.

Luxury Cruising: frequently asked questions
What does an all-inclusive cruise fare actually include?
It varies by line, and the differences are material. Nearly all include drinks, gratuities, all restaurants and Wi-Fi. Some add shore excursions, pre-cruise hotel nights or airfare. Because coverage differs so much, the only reliable comparison is a like-for-like total of fare plus everything you would otherwise buy.
How big are luxury cruise ships?
Most carry a few hundred to around a thousand guests, compared with several thousand on the largest mainstream ships. The smaller size is functional as well as exclusive: these ships can berth at small ports and marinas that larger vessels cannot physically enter.
Is luxury cruising more expensive than mainstream cruising?
Per night, yes — but the gap narrows once you add drinks, gratuities, specialty dining, Wi-Fi and excursions to the mainstream fare, and narrows further against a mainstream suite. It remains more expensive; it is simply not as far apart as the headline fares suggest.
