What to know about Expedition Cruising

Expedition cruising uses small, ice-strengthened ships to reach places conventional cruise ships cannot go, and it inverts the usual priorities: the destination is the product and the ship is the means of getting there. Guests go ashore by inflatable Zodiac rather than at a terminal, plans shift daily with ice and weather, and the onboard programme is built around naturalists, glaciologists and ornithologists rather than entertainment.

The two poles run on opposite calendars. Antarctica operates in the austral summer, roughly November through March, sailing mostly from Ushuaia in Argentina across the Drake Passage. The Arctic and Svalbard season runs through the boreal summer, roughly May to September. The Galápagos, Greenland, the Northwest Passage and the Kimberley coast make up much of the remainder.

Expedition Cruising: frequently asked questions

When can you cruise to Antarctica?

Only during the austral summer, roughly November to March, when the sea ice retreats enough for ships to operate safely. Outside that window the region is inaccessible to passenger vessels. Early-season sailings offer pristine ice and late-season sailings better wildlife activity.

Why are expedition ships so small?

Partly practicality — small ships can enter narrow fjords and shallow bays — and partly regulation. In Antarctica, industry rules restrict landings to a limited number of guests ashore at any one time and bar the largest vessels from landing passengers at all, so operators build ships sized to the rules.

What is a Zodiac landing?

Guests transfer from the ship to shore in rigid inflatable boats, since expedition destinations have no piers. Landings depend entirely on ice, wind and swell on the day, which is why expedition itineraries are published as intentions rather than schedules.
