About the SMB Cybersecurity Briefing
Updated .
The SMB Cybersecurity Briefing is an independent publication for small and mid-sized businesses (10 to 500 employees) and the people who support them. It exists to reduce ransomware, breach, fraud and downtime risk through clear threats, clear actions and clear verification. It is published as part of Your Essential Insights, and no individual author is named because none is claimed.
Who publishes this
This site is published by the operator of Your Essential Insights
(youressentialinsights.com) at the /smbcybersecurity/ address. There are no staff
biographies, bylines or professional credentials on these pages, and that is deliberate:
no individual is named because none is claimed. The publisher is the site and its
operator, and the way to reach them is the contact page.
Who this is for
Readers are owners, IT managers, managed service providers, compliance officers and operations leaders at businesses that cannot afford a full security team. Advice assumes one of three common environments, and says so where steps differ:
- Profile A — Microsoft 365 with Windows computers, the most common setup.
- Profile B — Google Workspace with mixed computers.
- Profile C — an on-premises Active Directory combined with Microsoft 365.
The test for every sentence is the same: does this reduce breach, fraud or downtime risk today? If not, it does not belong here.
Editorial standards
Honest limits matter more than reassurance, so here they are.
- Where the information comes from. Public primary sources: CISA (including the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue), NIST and the National Vulnerability Database, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and vendor security advisories. Established security research teams are used as a second tier. News coverage is used only when a primary source corroborates it.
- Every claim is cited. Daily editions name the source and the date it was published. Severity scores come from the National Vulnerability Database or the vendor only. A claim without a source is cut, not softened.
- Not professional advice. These pages are general guidance. They are not legal, insurance or incident-response advice, and nothing here replaces your vendor documentation or the guidance of a qualified professional.
- Accuracy is not guaranteed. Errors are possible. A figure the site cannot verify is written Not reported rather than estimated.
- Worked examples use hypothetical numbers. They show the arithmetic so you can substitute your own values; they are not measurements.
- Corrections. Reports sent through the contact page are prioritised. A fixed page carries an updated review date.
Every guide uses the same layout: a short quotable answer under the heading, steps written as action, where to do it, why it helps, how to verify it and a fallback if you cannot do it today, a plain-words explanation of the mechanism, a worked example, a visible last-reviewed date, and links to the agencies the page relies on.
Our editorial rules
- No fear and no jargon. Plain claims, with the limits stated.
- No vendor marketing. Native controls come first. A paid tool is described as a category with selection criteria, never as an endorsement.
- No affiliate links. Nothing here is paid placement.
- No invention. No made-up figures, indicators, scores, quotes or people. Where a detail matters and cannot be verified, the page says Not reported or sends you to the vendor advisory.
- Every threat is dated. An item with no date does not ship, and a vulnerability that led one edition does not lead the next unless its status changed.
- Time-sensitive material is reconfirmed. Vulnerability status and patch guidance change quickly, so editions tell you to check the linked sources before acting.
How this is funded
Today there is no advertising, no affiliate links and no sponsorship on this site. Nothing you read here is paid placement, and no vendor reviews pages before publication. If that ever changes, this page and the terms will be updated first and any such link or placement will be clearly marked.
Independence
This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any software vendor, security company, insurer or government agency. Names of agencies and products appear only for identification and as sources. For official information, use the agency named on each page.
