What it is

"Vitamin C" in skincare refers to either pure L-ascorbic acid (LAA) or one of its stabilized derivatives — sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP), magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP), ascorbyl glucoside, 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid (EAA), ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate (ATIP), and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THDA). LAA has the most data; derivatives are gentler, more stable, but require skin to convert them.

What it does

Evidence strength

Strong for L-ascorbic acid on photoaging, antioxidant photoprotection, and pigmentation. Moderate for THDA and EAA. Emerging for some lipid-soluble derivatives where stability is good but human end-point data is thinner.

Who should avoid it

Ideal concentration range

L-ascorbic acid10%–20% at pH below 3.5. Diminishing returns above 20%.
THDA / ATIP3%–10% in oil-soluble bases.
EAA (3-O-ethyl)1%–5%. Stable, water-soluble.
SAP / MAP1%–5%. Gentle, anti-acne secondary benefit.
Ascorbyl glucoside2%–5%.

Pregnancy considerations

Topical vitamin C is generally considered safe in pregnancy. Confirm with your provider, especially with high-strength LAA on broken skin or with low-pH peels.

Irritation potential

Moderate. Low-pH LAA can sting, especially on dry or cool mornings. Derivatives sting less but typically deliver less per application. If LAA causes redness past the first 5 minutes consistently, step down to 10% or switch to THDA.

Beginner guidance

  1. Apply 3–5 drops to dry skin after cleansing, before moisturizer and SPF.
  2. Start every other morning if you're sensitive.
  3. Discard if the serum turns dark amber — it's oxidized.
  4. Store in cool, dark conditions; refrigeration helps with LAA.
