Amazon Seller Briefing: September 23, 2026
Amazon Global Logistics extends Seller Managed Placement to air freight in early Q4 2026 with no FBA inbound placement service fee, shipping to all five US regions in seven to ten days. Amazon's own FAQ warns savings are minimal below 10 CBM.
Good morning, sellers! Welcome to September 23, 2026's edition. Today: Amazon extends Seller Managed Placement to air freight with no inbound placement fee — its own FAQ explains why that is not free — plus how little Amazon's biggest sellers overlap with TikTok Shop's. Let's dive in…

1. Top Story of the Day
Amazon extends Seller Managed Placement to air freight, and the $0 placement fee is not the whole number
What happened: Amazon Global Logistics is extending Seller Managed Placement, or SMP, to air freight in early Q4 2026, letting sellers ship to all five US fulfillment regions with no FBA inbound placement service fee. The air service is quoted at seven to ten calendar days from origin pickup to fulfillment center delivery, on daily flights from Shanghai and Hong Kong, each region locked to one fulfillment center rather than randomly distributed, with no category surcharges for apparel, electronics or lithium battery products. EcomCrew reported it September 22, 2026.
Why it matters: The placement fee disappears because you perform the five-way split yourself, and Amazon's own SMP FAQ sets out what replaces it. Shipments are split into five in China and sent to five US regions, and "each of the five shipments requires its own customs clearance documentation. The fixed fee is applied five times." Amazon recommends SMP above 10 CBM and says below it "the cost savings are none or minimal."
Expert take: The two sides scale in opposite directions, which makes the 10 CBM threshold real, not advisory. Placement savings scale with units; the replacement cost scales with shipments, and there are always five. On minimal splits, standard-size inbound placement runs about $0.40 per unit — 5,000 units avoid roughly $2,000, against four extra customs clearances. At 1,000 units the saving is about $400 against identical overhead.
The sharper question is what you compare against. Amazon-optimized splits already carry a $0.00 placement fee, so if that is what you send today, SMP's headline saves nothing and adds four customs entries. This targets sellers paying minimal-split or partial-split rates to control where inventory lands.
The conditions are strict: at least five cartons of the same ASIN mix, one per region, standard-size items only, all five under a single AGL AOSS PO with no partial shipments, and all five arriving within 45 days of the first arrival. Amazon warns non-compliance "may result in inbound defect fees," exempting delays AGL caused. Rates appear on Shipper Central, not Seller Central, so you cannot model this from fee reports.
Action items:
- Pull your Q4 air volume in CBM first — under 10 CBM, Amazon's guidance says not to bother.
- Check which split option you pay today; if Amazon-optimized, the saving is zero.
- Confirm your forwarder can execute a five-way split and clear five entries inside 45 days.

2. Amazon Policy & Program Updates
FBA & Fulfillment
A second Amazon Global Logistics air option, Economy Air, is live now: eleven to fifteen days from cargo receipt to destination FC unload, origins Shanghai and Shenzhen, single destination LAX, at rates below standard AGL air. Being a single-destination injection rather than a five-way split, the FBA inbound placement service fee still applies — a freight-rate saving, not a placement-fee one. (EcomCrew)
3. False Alarms & Noise Filter
Claim: Amazon announced an agentic Seller Assistant, Custom Analytics consolidating more than 100 metrics from 15 reports, and stickerless FBA inventory saving approximately $600 million annually, at Amazon Accelerate this week.
Status: Debunked.
What we know: Every one of those is an Accelerate 2025 announcement. The Amazon Selling Partners article carrying those figures is dated September 17, 2025, and the matching News_Amazon forum thread is about a year old — search engines are returning last year's coverage, undated, against 2026 queries. Accelerate 2026's substantive sessions have not happened: General Session #1 runs 12:00 PM ET today, #2 on September 24. Anything billed as a 2026 announcement before this afternoon is recycled. 4. Marketplace Opportunities & Threats
Only 498 businesses rank large on both Amazon and TikTok Shop
Setup: Marketplace Pulse compared its lists of the 10,000 largest Amazon.com sellers and the 10,000 largest US TikTok Shop sellers, published September 10, 2026.
Math: Just 498 appear on both — roughly 5% of either list.
Who this fits: Anyone weighing a second US channel on the assumption Amazon scale transfers to video commerce.
Window: No deadline; a structural read, not a dated opportunity.
Execute: Take it as evidence the two channels reward different competencies, not that expansion fails. Marketplace Pulse matches business names across two ranked lists without publishing its normalization, ranking period or entity reconciliation — it measures overlap, not attempted-and-failed expansion. Budget a distinct operating motion for TikTok Shop. (Marketplace Pulse)
5. International & Cross-Border
Taobao opens bulky-goods direct shipping ahead of Double 11
Taobao expanded overseas logistics for furniture, home-improvement materials and other bulky products on September 21, 2026, timed to Double 11. It spans 20 markets and more than 1.2 million merchants, with direct international shipping in 10 countries and regions — Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea among them — and over 90% of medium and large products support overseas direct shipping.
Bulky goods are where freight economics protected local sellers. If you sell furniture or home improvement into Southeast Asia, the shipping cost between you and a Chinese competitor is what moved. (Yicai)
