RV Safety, Legal & Restrictions
Section updated .
RV safety and legal exposure sits in four places: fire restrictions and smoke, weight ratings that limit what you can tow and carry, carbon monoxide and temperature inside a parked rig, and the rules for dumping and overnight parking. Each guide states how strictly the rule is enforced and how to confirm the current requirement.
Most rules that affect RVers are not obscure. They are local, they change often, and they are rarely posted where you can read them on arrival. A fire restriction can change from one week to the next. A weight rating is printed on a label you may never have read. A carbon monoxide alarm does nothing unless it works. Dumping and overnight parking rules differ town by town.
The guides here state the enforcement posture for each rule, because it helps you weigh a risk: strictly enforced, sporadically enforced, or rarely enforced but costly when it is. Penalties are never estimated; the agency named on each page is the source.

Read fire restrictions before any trip to dry country. Learn your weight ratings once and weigh the rig loaded. Test your alarms using the carbon monoxide and exposure guide. Check the dumping and parking rules before relying on a stop.
Fire restrictions on every trip, alarms at the start of each season, weights after every significant change in load.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find current fire restrictions?
On the website or recorded phone line of the agency that manages the land, such as the Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service or the state. Restrictions can change quickly, so check on the day you arrive.
Is it illegal to be over my weight rating?
Ratings exist for safety, and exceeding them can have legal and insurance consequences. The details vary, so verify with the manufacturer and your state, and weigh the rig loaded at a scale.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm in my RV?
Yes. Fuel-burning appliances, generators and nearby engines are all potential sources. Test the alarm at the start of each trip and replace it by the date the manufacturer gives.
Can I dump my tanks anywhere?
No. Dump only at a designated station or the place you are permitted to. Dumping elsewhere is illegal and harms people and water.
