How to Tighten iPhone Location Sharing
Published · Last reviewed
Two settings do almost all the work in Settings Privacy & Security Location Services. Change every app set to Always down to While Using the App, and turn off Precise Location for anything that only needs your general area. Then review Significant Locations at the bottom of System Services, which keeps an on-device history of the places you regularly visit.
The four levels, and what each really grants
| Setting | What the app gets | Right for |
|---|---|---|
| Never | Nothing | The correct default for most apps. |
| Ask Next Time | One-off access, re-asked each time | Apps you use rarely but occasionally need to locate you. |
| While Using the App | Location only when the app is open and visible | Maps, weather, ride-hailing, local search — the correct setting for nearly everything. |
| Always | Location in the background, indefinitely | Genuinely only: Find My, a family-safety app, and a fitness tracker you use for background workouts. |
Alongside the level sits Precise Location, a separate toggle. With it off, the app receives an approximate area of roughly a few square miles rather than your exact position. Turn it off for weather, news, and shopping; leave it on for navigation and anything that needs to find a specific address or a driver.
The audit
- Action
- Hunt down every app set to Always and ask what background location does for you specifically.
- Why it helps
- Always access is the highest-value permission for a data broker and the most expensive for your battery, and it is usually granted for a feature people never use.
- Verification
- Only Find My and, at most, one or two deliberate apps remain on Always.
- Action
- Turn off Precise Location for weather, news, shopping, and social apps.
- Why it helps
- These need to know your city, not your street. Precise coordinates over time reveal your home, workplace, and routine.
- Verification
- The apps still show local content correctly; you notice no difference in daily use.
- Action
- Open System Services at the very bottom of the Location Services list and turn off Location-Based Suggestions, Location-Based Ads, and Product Improvement entries you do not want.
- Why it helps
- These are separate from app permissions and are commonly missed; several are on by default.
- Verification
- The System Services list shows the entries you disabled as off.
- Action
- Review Significant Locations, also under System Services, then clear the history or turn the feature off.
- Why it helps
- It is an on-device, end-to-end encrypted log of where you regularly go, used for features like predicted routes. Useful, but worth seeing before deciding to keep.
- Verification
- The history list is empty, or the feature reads as off.
- Action
- Check who you share location with in Find My, and in Settings Privacy & Security Safety Check.
- Why it helps
- People-sharing is separate from app permissions and tends to outlive the relationship that created it.
- Verification
- Every person listed is someone you would deliberately share with today.
The Status Bar tells you the truth
iOS shows a small arrow indicator when location is being used, and a coloured dot at the top of the screen when the microphone or camera is active. Pull down Control Center and the top of the panel names the app that most recently used location. These indicators are drawn by the system, outside any app's control, so they cannot be suppressed — which makes them the most trustworthy signal on the device.
A note on Find My
Find My needs Always and Precise Location, and it should keep both. It is the feature that lets you recover a lost phone and the thing that makes losing one survivable. Turning it off to feel more private trades a real, personally-controlled benefit for a marginal reduction in data that Apple already handles as end-to-end encrypted.
How it works
iOS determines position from several sources at once: GPS satellites, nearby Wi-Fi network identifiers matched against a crowd-sourced database, cell-tower triangulation, and Bluetooth beacons. The system fuses these and hands apps a coordinate with an accuracy radius. Precise Location off does not disable the sensors — it degrades the value the app receives, snapping your position to a coarse region several miles across, so the app knows your city but not your street.
The Always permission is qualitatively different from the others, because background location is not a single reading but a time series. A sequence of coordinates over weeks reveals where you sleep, where you work, when you leave, who you visit, and when your routine changes — inferences that are far more valuable and far more sensitive than any single position. This is why one Always grant can matter more than ten While Using grants, and why iOS periodically shows you a map of what a background app has collected and asks whether to continue.
Significant Locations works on the same principle but keeps the analysis on the device. iOS clusters your position history to learn the places you frequent, encrypts the result end-to-end so Apple cannot read it, and uses it locally for predicted routes, Photos memories, and time-to-leave alerts. It is genuinely private in architecture — and worth looking at anyway, because seeing the list is how most people first grasp how legible a movement history is.
Worked example
A location audit on a phone with 94 apps. Under Location Services, six apps are set to Always: Find My, a fitness app, a supermarket app, a parking app, a weather app, and a social app.
Find My stays. The fitness app is used for outdoor runs, so background access is genuinely needed and stays. The other four are moved to While Using the App. The supermarket app was set to Always for store-entry offers the owner has never once used; the parking app only needs location while you are parking; the weather app needs a city; the social app needs nothing at all and is moved to Never.
Precise Location is then turned off for weather, news, and the supermarket app. Under System Services, Location-Based Ads and Location-Based Suggestions are switched off. Significant Locations shows 340 recorded places going back three years, including a hospital visited weekly in 2024 — a good illustration of why the list is worth seeing. The owner clears the history but leaves the feature on for the commute predictions.
The verification comes over the following week: no app broke, local weather still works, and overnight battery drain fell noticeably, because four apps stopped waking the location stack in the background.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Always and While Using the App?
While Using the App gives location only when the app is open and on screen, whereas Always allows background access even when the app is closed. Always is the setting worth auditing, because background location builds a movement history over time.
Should I turn off Precise Location?
Turn it off for weather, news, shopping, and social apps, which only need your general area. Leave it on for navigation, ride-hailing, and anything that has to find a specific address or vehicle.
What are Significant Locations on iPhone?
It is an on-device, end-to-end encrypted record of places you visit regularly, used for features like predicted routes and Photos memories. You can view, clear, or disable it under Location Services in System Services.
Does turning off Location Services save battery?
Reducing background location access usually does, because apps set to Always can wake the device and the location hardware repeatedly. Turning location off entirely saves more but breaks maps, weather, and Find My.
Can someone track my iPhone without me knowing?
iOS shows a location indicator in the status bar whenever location is in use and notifies you if an unknown item like an AirTag appears to be travelling with you. Running Safety Check also shows every person and app you currently share location with.
